Hi. Can anyone give me an idea of taxi costs around Lucca? We are wondering if we can just use taxis to get into town if we stay in countryside or if we need to rent a car.

A rental car is recommended if you rent a place out in the countryside.

Seems like this is the question you should ask the rental place. Often in Italy the cab meter starts from the time you call them so I am guessing it could be expensive to come and pick you up outside the city. A local car rental could be more appropriate.

I would also suggest a rental car if staying outside of town. If your hotel/agriturismo can't estimate the taxi fare, then that's another vote for car rental.

I stayed inside the walls of Lucca and traveled, by taxi, to a cooking class in the country side. It was 15E one way to the class. It wasn't too far outside of Lucca.
