Taxi Cost for 5 from Fiumicino?

I understand that a taxi from airport to "within" Rome walls for 4 passengers and a suitcase each is 48E. But I have not been able to figure out the fee for a fifth person and suitcase. I see many references to additional and/or supplemental fees, but I no mention of how much these fees are. Any guidance/advice is greatly appreciated - Thanks in advance!

Correct me if I'm wrong, forumites, but in March 2017 my wife and I were charged a flat 48 Euro from Fiumicino to Campo de' Fiori, and I believe that was a regulated rate at the time. Five people with baggage may require a larger or two vehicles.

Jay, thanks for the response. Yes, fee is regulated and 48E for up to 4 people and I see that there are minivan-sized taxis to accommodate more than 4, but what I cannot find is the fee for that fifth passenger. Maybe my wife will get strapped to the roof.

Is it urgent that you know ahead of time?

I have in my trip notes that the extra passenger surcharge is 1 euro (unfortunately I don't remember where I sourced that info from). I know that there is also a surcharge for the extra baggage that comes with the extra passenger (also nominal). I ended up booking a private transfer for 65 euros as there are 6 of us and I was worried about having to wait in the taxi line for a van. Based on previous trips, we are very foggy after the overnight flight and I like to keep things as simple as possible!

Marrone! Enough of those comments and you might not make it back. Is she any good with the garrote? :)

Norma - Experience has taught me that it's good to know taxi fees ahead of time: several years ago my hotel in Rome said it would be about 12E from Termini to hotel. At cab stand, an SPQR official Roman taxi offered to take us for 30E. When I declined and indicated that fee should be 12E, he motioned another cab to the front of line, who took me for 12E.

LynnP - Thanks for the information, which is very helpful. I just want to make sure that I'm in the ballpark with regard to fee - I don't want to pay 20E for the fifth passenger...

Jay - Looks like I'll be strapped to the roof.

I think the problem maybe that the cab is limited to four people. I know the fee is fixed at 48 euro for four and luggage. Contact a private service - Romacab - and ask for a quote for five. Or just take two.

Considering the size of your group and the amount of luggage, consider a private car service. After a long flight and with a group that large there will be nothing better than having a private driver meet the group inside the terminal and whisk the lot of you to your hotel. And there probably will not be that much difference in the cost vs using a taxi(s), We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service -- not a cab company -- despite the name. We always use them and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We send an email detailing our needs and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. At one time you did have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey, but I think they now take credit cards.

Thanks everyone! Your posts are very helpful. I found published fees (see link below), but still a bit confusing.

My sense is that fee from Fiumicino to city center will be 48E for four passengers and suitcase each. In addition, fee for fifth passenger will be 1E plus 1E for suitcase. After my trip, I'll update with my experience and findings.

Yes, it’s a nominal extra fee (1€) however only a minivan or the ugly Fiat Multipla car can accommodate 5 passengers and a driver. Fortunately at the airport there will be enough minivan taxis to be able to accommodate your party. I’ve noticed several taxi cabs using the Prius V, which I believe holds 6.
But also go to www.romecabs.com and check. Their rates are rarely more than 5€ over the taxicab, and they meet you up inside

Hello Everyone,

I just got back from Rome and wanted to share my experience in taxi from FCO to Trastevere (within walls).

Based on PDF below, I thought fee would be 50E (48E for 4 passengers and their 4 suitcases, plus 1E for fifth passenger and an additional euro for carryon.

https://www.comune.roma.it/web-resources/cms/documents/tariffario_taxi_A.pdf

When we got to airport, I found correct taxi (Commune di Roma) and 48E posted amount. However, the driver said the fee was 65E, which I argued but he did not budge on the price and I left the area and found Information Desk, which was pretty useless. I went back to taxi area and was ready to pay the 65E but the taxi driver said he’d take us for 50E.

So I ended up paying the expected 50E but I remain confused on what the fee should have been.

I am still trying to figure out what the fee should be and if I get an answer, I will post. Otherwise, I can only recommend that you have the same problem that I did, you see if any other taxis are willing to take you for the 50E I paid.

Everyone - below is response from Rick's travel group - price for 5 should be 50E:

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your email.

Official taxis should have a fixed rate for that route, and it looks like it should cost 48 euros.

You are correct that your trip should have only cost 50 euros, as the second driver offered.

If you ever feel that a taxi driver is charging too much, simply change drivers as you did in your case.

Hopefully this helps.
