I'll arrive in Bologna mid-afternoon this coming Sunday, traveling solo and with luggage.
Is a taxi the way to get to my lodging, or should I consider something else?
There’s an official taxi line at the station. Fares are reasonable. Of course if your hotel is near the station, you could walk.
I don't like wandering around unfamiliar cities with luggage after a long travel day, so I used a Taxi from the station in Bologna. As mentioned above, the cost was reasonable and it was a much easier solution.
With luggage I would take a taxi since I only do carryon I rarely take a taxi from a main train station.
Beware: young men hang around the train station offering directions, etc. of course, they solicit tips. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, just so you know. Walking to town from station is a little downhill. Taxi highly recommended for return.
