Taxi app for use when holidaying in Italy

If we need to use a taxi or uber to get from place to place within Florence and Rome, should we use an app to book or rely on picking up taxis from a taxi stand? If an app is preferred, what app is best?

Taxis can be hailed at stands. Uber doesn’t exist in Italy the way it does in the USA. They’re always regular taxis. Florence isn’t that large of a city to need a taxi to get around, honestly.

We used Uber Black several times when it was later in the evening and we didn't want to walk to find a taxi stand. Very easy.

Depends a bit on the city, as the local taxis may use different hailing apps. Since the conventional Uber/Bolt does not work (only licensed taxis and drivers are allowed). The hailing apps, and Uber Black, basically utilize existing cabs, but with the advantage that you know credit card payment will be no issue, and a good estimate of cost. FreeNow for example works well in Rome and Milan, as does Uber Black. For Florence, AppTaxi and ItTaxi seem to be the preferred ones. Not sure if any one app would work well across all of Italy.

For Florence AppTaxi and TaxiMove are the two apps used by the two cooperative taxi dispatch companies.
You can also call the two companies at the numbers below:

I think ItTaxi, which is the preferred app in Rome, owned by the Italian Radio Taxi association, works also in Florence since 1/1/2025.

UberBlack (which summons licensed limo drivers) works but will be more expensive.

Not sure if UberTaxi, which works in Rome to summon regular taxi, also works in Florence. In any case Uber also adds 2 or 3€ to the taxi fare if you use their app to summon a taxi.

Free Now also works (at least in Rome) to summon a taxi. Like Uber they also add a 3€ commission to the taxi fare.

Chances are that for Florence the only time you will use a taxi is from the station/airport to the hotel, and viceversa. The city center is too small to bother to use a taxi, unless you have physical mobility issues. Just walk everywhere.
