I will be traveling from Sorento to Taranto by rail but need to get to Metaponto. Does anyone know if a bus will get me there? Also, does anyone know if a rental car is necessary for my 7 days in Metaponto?

Whether you need a car or not depends on what you intend to do. If visiting various places of interest, yes, you will need a car. Check the local busline to see if there is a bus service from Taranto. My bus trip to Sicily went close to Metaponto but did not stop, so there is a decent chance that one bus actually goes there.

Karen, there is a train and bus that goes from Taranto to Metaponto. The train is 38-45 min. The bus leaves the Taranto train station at 1250 and 1750 and takes 45 min. Check out the schedules on this website under "plan your trip". Then on the left side of the screen, click on Deutsche Bahn, then click on the blue highlighted Deutsche Bahn site and enter your to/from info. It will give you train and bus schedules leaving from the train terminal. Have fun!
