Tap iPhone or credit card on Rome transportation

Does anyone have any RECENT real life experience using their CC or iPhone to pay for a ride on the bus or Metro in Rome?
On a bus, where do you tap your CC or iPhone to buy the ticket?
If you are stopped by an inspector, how do you prove you paid for your ticket using your CC or iPhone?
On a bus, do you need to Tap out? If so, where do you do that?
Do I need a special app on my iPhone to use the tap to pay function?

I've watched all the Youtube videos on How to- Rome metro and bus, but most are over a year old and do not cover the RECENT tap and pay features.
I've read the official Rome transport website on how to do this, but I'm looking for real life experience from a tourist.
Thanks for any real life experience you can share with me.

For others reading this topic, here is the link to the official ATAC Web page:

The RS guidebook instructs that you enter busses from the front or rear doors, which implies that there was a ticket validator at each, and those should now be contactless readers.

The one ambiguity I see is whether you need their app to ride the Roma-Lido rail line, which I believe is the train you would take to Ostia Antica. This is in reference to fare validation.

Interestingly, there isn't an update regarding this topic for the RS Rome guidebook here on the RS site.
