Taormina, Sicily

Hi Travelers,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a boutique hotel, b&b, or hotel that may be located outside of Taormina city center which may provide a shuttle service to and from Taormina city center? Hope to be travelling in mid or late August this year.

This Rick Steve's Sicily Tour sounds wonderful, but a bit to active for me at this time.

Thank you for any suggestions. Ed and Barb

We stayed at Hotel Villa Angela and liked it. It's outside the city center, in the hills. (This was before RS offered a Sicily tour when we went with an Odysseys Intl tour that booked us there. There was a shuttle, but you could also walk to city center (lots of stairs). Some years later, we took the RS Sicily tour and we stayed near the city center but up the hill - much more convenient. We were in our mid-60s when we took the RS tour and as I recall it wasn't too hard. We took the first tour of the year so the weather was coolish. August in Italy especially in the south is brutal even if there is a/c in your hotel.

Can I ask why you want to be located outside of the city center? If you are not that active, it seems to me that the easiest way to enjoy the town would be to be right in the center. I believe there are lots of little B and Bs in the town. It is traffic free, so any shuttle is going to drop you at the edge and you will have to walk a bit anyways.
We stayed at Hotel Bel Soggiorno. We liked it very much, however it did not have a shuttle and we had to walk up to the town and I think it would be too much. There was a little B and B right by the Duomo that I think is recommended in the RS Sicily book.

We have stayed in Taormina several times. I think my best recommendation is Hotel Condor...a family run hotel off the beaten track (but an easy walk to the main street). They offer a shuttle to nearby beaches which we enjoyed after a month of traveling on the island. We also stayed at Hotel Continental on our first RS tour (in 2010!)...the room was simple but a great location and a fantastic deck overlooking the water (we went back for drinks on that patio a few years ago....still amazing). We also stayed once at Villa Fiorita, which was very nice, but it looks like the prices have really escalated!

We stayed at Hotel Villa Ducale high above Taormina, with an amazing ocean view. There is a switchback-type stairway nearby (also with amazing views) that leads down into the center of town, or you can use the hotel's free shuttle van service, or use the local bus service with a stop right at the hotel.

Chiosco della Rocca (the "church in the rocks") is a short walk from the hotel, near the top of the stairs going down into town.

Castelmola is just above the hotel, but you would probably want to catch the bus out front of the hotel to get up there.
