Messina (Sicily): Taormina and Bay of Naxos Excursion

Norwegian Cruise Lines has added the following shore excursion for guests who use a cane or walker.

I have already done some research and apparently the area is very beautiful.

The excursion is four hours long, no meal, and costs $319. With my discounts, it will probably cost me about $250.00

I was curious about what members of the forum think about this area of the world, the excursion and the cost.

"This excursion is for guests that use a cane/walker, have limited mobility issues Tour includes step-free routes, shorter distances and no stairs.

Explore the architectural gems throughout the Old Town of Taormina, an enticing setting with a remarkable wealth of attractions. From Piazza IX Aprile, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and foreboding Mount Etna. The 17th-century Church of St. Joseph and an iconic clock tower overlook the square, which is renowned for its black-and-white checkered marble that resembles a giant chessboard. Piazza Duomo is another popular gathering place in the heart of Old Town. Be sure to note the statue of a minotaur on the central fountain, as it has become a symbol of Taormina. An enlightening interior visit of the cathedral behind the fountain will reveal features such as wooden beams with Arab motifs, 15th-century paintings and chapels on either side of the main altar. Not far out of town, you will pause for photos at a lookout above the beautiful Bay of Naxos.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Gain a historical understanding of Taormina by meandering through its atmospheric Old Town.
• Visit squares that are ideal for people-watching and explore the churches that overlook them.
• Enjoy the ultimate view of Taormina and the sea from a hilltop vantage point."

We spent three nights there last May. It is a very attractive town. It also is not that big and I would guess very crowded when cruise boats are in port. There were no cruises when we were there. It does have steps and hills but also large flat portions which it appears is where the tour goes. The biggest issue with the tour from my perspective is it does not go to the Greek Theater which is the highlight. The theater is up a hill and has, of course, steps inside. I am sure this is why they skip it.

Thank you BethFL

I am thinking of doing my own thing in Messina, just getting off the ship and walking to and around attractions close to the cruise port.

I have been reading reviews about Messina and looking at google maps. It seem like there is plenty to see and do around the cruise port to keep me satisfied.

By the time I get to Messina, I might want a relaxing day as well as wanting to save some money.

Thanks for your information
