We're flying into the Naples Airport and rather bus to train station to take the train to Sorrento, I was thinking we could just take the bus from the airport to Sorrento. Has anyone had any experience with this? Pros/cons?
Cons: Luggage is very much "do it your self." The driver just opens up the bottom compartments and then has a cigarette.
Pros: If I remember right, the fare is 14 Euro. Drops you off right at the Sorrento Train Station.
Thanks for the help! It sounds very similar to the motorcoaches that run between NYC and DC, which are very do-it-yourself as well.
I stand corrected.
I would think you are more likely to be pickpocketed on a crowded bus, made more so by your luggage, than on a train. Buses are VERY crowded and finding room for you AND your luggage will be tough. Not to mention having to move your luggage out of the aisle to let people on and off. I would not take the bus as I think it is inconsiderate to subject other riders to your luggage. Getting my point? Maybe you should hire a car.
The Curreri bus to Sorrento is awesome. You step outside the door of the airport and it is there. You stow your luggage under the bus and ride in comfort in their big beautiful busses to Sorrento. It is also cheap and runs often. We loved it. Below is a link with the timetable; in English.
On the off-chance that there's a stop between the airport and Sorrento, be sure to watch to make sure that your luggage doesn't get removed from under the bus without you.
Michael, as I recall the bus did let some people off before Sorrento, but these were all requested walk offs. As you come into Naples and drive out of it, you do begin to realize that its "rougher" than most other areas in Italy. So, a little more vigilance is needed. But no more than South Central LA, South Chicago, Baltimore or DC. I feel safer in Naples than any of those areas in the US.
Just took the bus last month-cheap, clean, and efficient-definitely the way to go
Enjoy
The luggage space under the driver's (left) side of the bus is for Sorrento passengers use. The rest goes on the right and the driver does get off to open and shut the hold. It's to do with being able to remove your case at the intermediate stops without being run over! So if you put your luggage on the left hand side it should be secure.
The fare is (was in May 2010) 10 euro pp.
