I would like to know if it is possible to make use of the Bus services/ train to get to wine farms in Tuscany?
We are based in Florence, and thinking of visiting small town like Greve or San Gimi.. and then from there take a taxi or bus to some local wine farms. So making our own wine tour?
Is this possible?
Catch a cab over to the Hertz location on Sansovino and pickup a rental car. It is about 2 miles from the train station.
They can give you directions to the motorway going south that avoids all ZTLs.
By car, you can see so much territory even if it's just for one day.
We especially loved visiting Volterra--1/2 hr. on the other side of San Gimignano. For wine, it is hard to beat Montalgino.
If you absolutely don't want to rent a car (which is the best way to see the smaller Tuscan towns and the wineries), then I would suggest you take a guided tour from Florence that goes to one or more of the hill towns and also stops at a winery/vineyard. Check out this page from Tripadvisor for some ideas, or just google "Tuscany wine tours from Florence". Personally I wouldn't mess with trying to coordinate train and public buses in Tuscany.
A bit of missing info here: the OP will also have an 18 month-old child along.
Good to be aware of, maybe, as that fact may affect some of the responses?
Thanks for that info Kathy. That does make a difference as some group tours may not allow a small child, definitely something to be aware of. And, in that case, I definitely wouldn't try the train/bus thing but rather would probably rent a car to make it easier.
