Taking the a Day Trip Florence to Venice

We plan on staying in the Florence area this summer and were wondering if this is practical or should we stay closer the Venice for the day trip?

Why not stay in Venice at least one night to experience it. It's wonderful!

We did this several trips ago. Keep in mind that it is a 3 hour one way train trip from Florence to Venice. You can certainly do it. We had time for a nice lunch, saw the Jewish Ghetto with a tour of the synagoges, took the elevator to the top of the tower- walked around the small streets, got in some shopping, and made it back to the train station for our 6Pm train.

We really enjoyed our day out to Venice, I felt like we got a good feel for the city. I might go back, but I feel like I got a good idea of the town in just one day. It is always nice to be able to stay overnight in a town to experience after the day tripers...but sometimes you get to be that day tripper!

I've recently come back from 4 1/2 days in Venice and wished it was longer. It is a bit of a hike to get there and if you take into account the time to get there and back you won't have a lot of time to sightsee. I'd strongly suggest trying to stay over night, at least you'll have the equivalent of a good full day to see and do things and will feel if you have 'seen' some of Venice.
