Hi all!
My mom (mid-60s) and I (mid-20s) first trip to Italy, staying in Rome, Naples, and Ischia in October. We both love art, history (particularly ancient Roman), and beautiful scenery. My mom has dreamed of visiting Pompeii since she was a girl and I am a big fan of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels, which made it easy to decide where to go after Rome.
With just 7 full days, I’m trying to strike a balance between site-hopping and more relaxed wanders. Would love any feedback on this tentative itinerary!
Day 1: Arrive in Rome 4pm, get settled
Day 2: (order will depend on the colosseum timeslot I get) Colosseum, forum, basilica di San Clemente, testaccio market, giardino degli aranci
Day 3: borghese gallery (reserved), villa borghese wander, national Roman museum, nearby churches
Day 4: St Peter’s Basilica first thing, piazza navona, palazzo altemps (included with national museum ticket), Pantheon, nearby churches
Day 5: direct morning train to Pompeii, spend most of the day at the site (pack sandwiches), circumvesuviana train to Naples, Naples duomo, spaccanapoli area wander, pizza!
Day 6: archaeological museum, wander quartieri spagnioli and get lunch/pastries, ferry to Ischia late afternoon, wander ischia Porto/ponte
Day 7: cavascura thermal baths, santangelo, bay of sorgeto, forio sunset at chiesa del soccorso
Day 8: aragonese castle, ferry back to Naples, train back to Rome, ???
Day 9: flight home out of FCO
Not quite sure the best way to do the last two days. Train back to Rome early enough for one final city wander? Spend most of the day on Ischia and come back to Rome just to sleep? Sleep near the airport instead?
Thanks in advance for the help! I want to plan everything out so my mom and I can just enjoy the time together without too many decisions :)
