Takeout Food in Rome

I will be in Rome in early November, staying in an apartment near Piazza Navona. Can anyone recommend a good place to get takeout food - sandwiches, salads, pizzas, bakery items, etc.

When staying in an apartment, we love to eat takeout in our place. We find it relaxing, and nowadays it lowers the risk of catching Covid. Someplace convenient to Piazza Navona would be great, but we would be happy to walk a mile or so for good takeout.

Thank you!

Takeout has become so popular due to Covid, you should have no problem. A quick google search: “piazza navona restaurant takeout” will give you an idea of the nearby places advertising takeout.

Nothing specific to that area, but I think now it is much easier to get takeout from nearly any restaurant in Rome due to the pandemic. Most places started doing it just to survive, and I think many still are, so if you find a restaurant you like, just ask.

I know near where we usually stay in the Trastevere, there is a place call Food Factory, that preps ready to go food for taking home, and I recall seeing one or two other places in that neighborhood doing similar. The general term you are looking for is a Tavola Caldo, basically "hot table". They will have hot dishes to take away. Of course, yeah, bakeries you can get suppli and pizza, even some grocery stores have a decent selection of heat to eat meals. You might have better luck if you head to the neighborhoods around the tourist center, since most cater to residents rather than tourists.

What is the Italian term for "takeaway / takeout / carry out "? I think its helpful to know that kind of stuff.

To be honest, "take away" works pretty good and is pretty universally understood.

We got take-away from two places in Rome, in the Testaccio neighborhood, not close to be Piazza Navona, but you should be able to find several closer places that will accommodate you. Many pizza places have cardboard take out boxes, just like what we’ve got in the USA. There are also restaurants that will put meals in aluminum pans with cardboard lids, and/or styrofoam containers. The tavola calda shops are excellent, especially if you have the means to reheat things.

Rome also has increasing Chinese, sushi, and poke places, if you’re not set on Italian/Roman food.

For the record, our excellent places were Da Remo pizzaria, and il Bucatino, a block from each other.

Hey Carol, just came back from Rome a day ago. You may have read this elsewhere, but walk a block or 2 away from Piazza Navona and find a charming little ristorante to place your takeaway order. The food is better in both place and price. I saw lots of take out orders. From one Pittsburgher to another, have a spritz while waiting. You do know that a Pittsburgh bar exists a two minute walk from Piazza Navona? Bar only, no food. "Yinz" guys enjoy!

In January we stayed just northwest of Piazza Navona--probably a five-minute walk from where you will be. On Via dei Coronari is "I Suppli dei Coronari", a small restaurant with a few dine-in tables that appeared to do most of its business in take-away food. In addition to suppli they served a variety of pastas (the menu varied from day to day). Not fine dining, but tasty and convenient. There are a lot of restaurants in the area; I suspect most will be equipped to prepare take-away food. There is also a Carrefour Express on Via del Governo Vecchio; they had some pre-made sandwiches and salads that we enjoyed for a couple of light evening meals after eating a more substantial meal for lunch.

If you like tiramisu, there is a fantastic shop near you. Mr. 100 Tiramisu. We shared their 3-choice sampler, and they were fantastic!

Thanks so much for the helpful responses. I get the feeling we won’t have any trouble finding good takeaway food. I have made notes about the specific places and terminology.

frppt1, Do you recall the name of the ristorante you liked so well?

Jean, a three tiramisu sampler sounds like heaven. I’m thinking I’ll be walking enough to justify the calories!

Carol,
I Pizzicaroli for takeout near the P. Navona, and La Botticella is the Pittsburgh bar for drinks only. Enjoy!
