T Mobile coverage in Italy

How is T mobile coverage in Italy - more specifically for driving in Tuscany. Hoping to use phone map apps for navigation (as well as some paper maps). Thanks!

T Mobile doesn’t have its own network overseas, therefore they will hookup with whichever local network has the best signal (generally TIM or Vodafone).
Coverage in Tuscany by TIM and Vodafone is good, however if you venture into secluded mountainous areas you might run into blind spots where there is no signal at all. That’s not any different than in the US.

I have found T-Moblie intl service seamless. You turn on the phone when you land and it picks up a local service.
I'd have a paper map for backup if you will be really really roaming, but we never needed it.

The only time my signal dropped with T-Mobile was in the mountains of Sardinia. I was using Google Maps and had downloaded the map of Sardinia. Any time I lost signal, it seamlessly change to offline mode and and then back again as I recovered signal.

Mapping apps like Google Maps can work offline without any mobile signal, but you must download the maps "offline" ahead of time. Start the Google Maps app (or whichever navigation app you are using) and find the "offline" option and download the map of say Tuscany (you can choose the area) - the larger the map you download in Google Maps "offline" the more space it will take on your device. Offline maps in Google Maps expire in 30 days; you'll be asked to download/update them after that, but otherwise, you can download the "offline" area in Google Maps whenever you wish; within 30 days of your trip in Italy would be ideal.

T-Mobile's unlimited 2G roaming data can be a little slow, but it be sufficient for navigation apps. T-Mobile has just recently introduced some new "data pass" options if you wish to buy high speed data access for short periods of time, in case the 2G data turns out to be too slow.

We just used T-Mobile last month for our driving around in Umbria. There was just one patch where we couldn't get coverage. Unfortunately, it was night-time and we guessed the wrong road. Once coverage came back, we learned we had been going in the completely opposite direction!

I have the standard T-Mobile type account. In Europe I have 3G speed, up to 2 gig.
So I watch out how much data I use away from Wi-Fi.
Have used in the Naples, Positano, Pompeii, etc, region w/ great success
(and southern Spain, Switzerland, N France)
