Ortigia sounds lovely for an early May stay, but we'll have a car. Does anyone recommend a hotel on Ortigia (in the 70-110 Euro range) that has convenient parking? Alternatively, in Syracuse near the historic sites or along the sea? I'm finding hotels of interest in other Sicilian cities, but not much of interest in our price range in Syracuse.
Thanks!
We are staying in Syracusa in early May, a 5 min walk from Ortigia. We generally book our hotels through booking.com. You can check their site for Syracusa or Ortigia and sort by price to find a hotel. Can't recommend our hotel as we've not been there yet but you can check B&B Caravaggio.
Is the Hotel Gutkowski in your range? I think at least some of their rooms may be. It's a wonderful small hotel with a nice breakfast and a terrific terrace on the top. And it's also right by the big parking lot for Ortygia (I can't imagine that too many places have convenient parking there, everything is so jumbled together.) We also loved the Gutkowski because it faces east so you see a beautiful sunrise in the morning, but the hotel (the terrace, your room) is saved from baking all afternoon in the hot Sicilian sun. I'd return there in a heartbeat.
Botel Posta is in your price range, clean and comfortable, nice. breakfast. It's on Viale Trieste in Ortigia, a couple of blocks from the bridge. There is a parking lot nearby, about one block away, and a bus station with good connections to the new city; there's also an electric mini-bus that makes a circuit around Ortigia and the to the train/bus station, but parking in the new town is easier than in Palermo, for example. Also very near the hotel is a big daily market with some yummy samples.
I'd recommend staying in Ortygia rather than Syracuse. We stayed right in the historic center at B & B Itaca - an easy walk to some fantastic restaurants. We also had a car and parked at the Public Parking lot - it was about 10 minute walk to the hotel. Once we parked, we didn't need our car. We walked to the Archeological Museum in Syracuse but I think that public transportation is available. Ortygia was one of our favorite stops in Sicily!
