Switzerland to Italy & back, what should we expect and/or plan for?

Hello!
I am hoping that someone on this forum can tell me if there are any requirements/regulations we need to plan for when traveling between Switzerland & Italy (i.e customs or required forms, etc).

We are from the US and will be traveling to Switzerland & Italy. After 2 weeks in Switzerland, we are thinking about taking the train from Interlaken to Milan and then taking a flight from Milan to Palermo. We will then return to Switzerland by flying from Palermo to Zurich. Since we are crossing borders, will we need to do anything special once we depart the train in Milan? Will we have to go through customs (or any type of formaliity) before we board our flight from Milan to Palermo? How about when we fly back to Zurich from Milan? Any information will be greatly appreciated!

No, for your flights and trains between Switzerland and Italy, there will be no immigration or customs requirements. Both countries are part of the Schengen Agreement, eliminating those checks. So after your first entry from the U.S., there will be no other formalities.

At the moment, there are no negative COVID tests required either, just proof of vaccination and booster. I’d keep an eye on those rules as they are of course still in flux.

While both Italy and Switzerland are part of Schengen, Switzerland is not an EU-member. So there will be customs checks between Switzerland and Italy, although you probably won't notice them.
