Will be flying to Zurich to visit friends in Basel, then hope to spend the remaining 8 days in Italy, stopping in Lugano. Would like to hit Como and Florence, any thoughts on agenda?

Anne, To begin with, are you planning to use open jaw flights (inbound Zurich, outbound Italy)??? If you do decide to use open jaw flights, Milan / MXP would probably provide the best choices for flights back to the U.S. With only eight days, you won't have time to visit many locations. In order make suggestions on "agenda", it would help to have some idea what you're interested in seeing? Are you planning to visit the town of Como, or other locations on Lago di Como? Varenna is a big favourite with many here, and is a great place to spend a few days (although it will probably be "quiet" in April). If you haven't been to Florence before, two or three days would be a good time frame, as there's LOTS to see. Happy Travels!
