Switching cruise night for overland

I've booked a 10 night Western Med cruise and the time allowed at some of the most desired locations seems woefully short.  Once we exclude bus or train travel times at Livorno and Civitavecchia we probably only have 9-10 hours in each city (Firenze and Rome).  So a radical plan has been proposed: Don't reboard the ship at the harbour; but take a high speed train intercity.

Pros:
Get to Rome during the evening and have time to visit more sights.
Be available to start the museums when they open in the morning.
Save time in traffic.
Take part in the evening passeggiata.
See the buildings floodlit at night.

Cons
Extra cost for train and hotel stay.
Dinner and breakfast at own cost.
Missing out extra calories in the MDR (or is this actually a Pro?)

From our perspective, after such a long period of non-travel, time is money, so the additional costs above definitely seem work the added time in the Eternal City.

Provided I prewarn guest services of my plan so they aren't tempted to delay departure at Livorno and send out a search party, are then any other factors or risks I need to take into account?  Is this a mad plan or worthwhile undertaking?

If it doesn’t confound the cruise line and you can afford it, go ahead.

Welcome to this board, fontyza, with your first post.

Have you cruised, or been to Europe before?

I think the key to this is whether the cruise line will allow it. You should contact them for their policies.

What Carol said. I looked into this because we were considering a cruise and then heading to Sorrento right after. The 2nd last stop was Naples before ending in Civitavecchia and so we thought it would be a good idea to check out in Naples and head to Sorrento. We were told by NCL that we couldn't.

Yours is a bit of a different situation since it's not a checkout day, but I'd get it in writing in advance.

Alan, you know, there's a different thread about someone wanting to disobey a flight-safety rule to coddle their toddler's sleep. I agree with the advice that safety is not negotiable, not even for helicopters. I think the reply from NCL falls into a different category.

You're paying for a transportation product (I've been on eight Windstar ocean cruises, and one other line) and want to arrange something special, well in advance. You're entitled to know if this is a government rule to disembark with the same people who embarked, or if it's just a cozy deal with travel providers doing business at the lucrative port of Civitavecchia? Your alternative departure is even in the same country. I find NCL unreasonable. Vaguely, I remember one or two cabins getting off Windstar tours early, but I certainly don't remember where.

You had to deposit the full cost of the cruise X months before the trip, and it's (?) no longer fully refundable. You have earned some consideration of your request. Opinion. Alan, I'm replying to you here because the OP is the first post by a new member. They have not come back to answer my question yet.

It may have to do with cabotage rules. For example, many countries forbid foreign airlines from picking people up and dropping people off in their country. Example American Airlines taking on passengers in a Toronto and flying them to Vancouver where they disembark.

I believe this same situation may apply to foreign cruise ships not being allowed to transport from one place to another except for designated port stops. Disembarkation requiring you to retrieve your passport from the purser (you will need it for the hotel) may be a similar thing. Not sure.

Hi everyone and thank you for your time and consideration.

This won't be our first time in Europe nor first on a cruise. I've been using this website, as well as the youtube channel and audio app for years to help plan my trips. However I haven't been to Italy this millenium and the wife has never been there so her "shopping list" of must see sites is longer than mine. So I'm dutifully trying to find solutions to get as much crammed in as possible. I may be falling into the trap of trying to shoehorn too many things in from a few cancelled trips over the last 4-5 years. But our biggest constraint is time, so we're willing to stretch the budget to achieve more of our travel dreams.

In this case we are not disembarking early, which I understand can cause issues, but simply choosing a quicker transfer between 2 cities (within the same country) on our 4th night of a 10 night cruise.
