Swimming in the Blue Grotto

Many bloggers have been posting their experiences at the Blue Grotto, and report that to actualy swim in the Grotto is a blast and of course free after the row boats stop going in. Anyone done this on their own? Looks like you just walk down those steep stairs and swim right in. Is that the case?

I personally would not recommend doing this. We visited the blue grotto in July 2006 and the boat ride from Capri was beautiful! Transferring into the smaller boat to go into the grotto was something we won't forget along with the guy singing O Solo Mio!

Jeff
I did this two years ago with a bunch of friends. Oh my gosh it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Why just look at that intense blue water from a boat when you can be swimming in it? Like you said, you do just walk down the stairs and jump in. It is a very short swim into the cave and as I recall there is a rope tied from the outside going in so you can use it to kind of pull your way in. You need to watch out for incoming waves and the rising tide. I went during June and there was plenty of clearance at 5:00pm. Once inside you can hang on to the edges of the cave or just tread. It is such an adventure and I will be doing it again this September.

seems kind of dangerous....make sure you have some sort of health insurance/travel insurance if you choose to do it. One crash against a rock could end up costing you a lot of money!

Jeff you are correct walk down the steps and jump in. I did this last summer. Be careful of the tide and use the rope to pull yourself in if needed. Not all that dangerous if you're a fairly good swimmer.
