Swimming holes- Bagni Di Lucca

Hi,
We will be staying in Lucca as our home base for 6 nights in early August. Besides a visit to Viareggio, we were thinking another location we could cool off from the heat, is wading/swimming in the Lima river. So far, my search points to taking a train from Lucca to Bagni di Lucca. I have found some links that say swim "near the bridge to Casoli". How do we get there without a car (taxi? bus access?) and is it appropriate to just jump into the Lima River near a bridge? I also have found links to organized soft rafting and water trekking, but that means making a reservation and payment for an organized activity. This might be the option for our party of six (i.e. how exactly do find a bus that drops us off near a bridge? and then brings us back into Bagni di Lucca?) I am just trying to find out if there other options for swimming holes/wild swimming in the Lima River. Does anyone have experience with this?

We could also love a nice swimming pool to cool off. But only the holiday homes seem to have swimming pools. We are staying in a flat inside Lucca walls. Wish we could have access to a nice holiday or hotel pool...
Thanks,
Sam

I think you mean Bagni di Lucca, which is on a river; or did you mean Barga, which is quite near Lucca?
I'm not sure I'd fancy swimming in an Italian river, as the ones I've seen are fast flowing, and full of green vegetation.
Most had high built up sides so no way of getting back out.
I just checked my photos of Bagni di Lucca, and the river is about 12 feet below the road/walls.
Perhaps someone else here might know of a good place?

They have also a lot of river rafting going on in that area.
The most famous spot for outdoor activities near Bagni di Lucca is the Canyon Park.

Not sure about swimming in the Lima river but you can ask locals for the best spots..
