SW Sicily

With one day planned for SW Sicily, if I have to choose between Selinunte or Agrigento/Valley of the Temples, what do you think it should be?

Have been to both, and I would definitely choose Agrigento. Selinute is also wonderful, but it's more "ruined" -- just pieces of temples primarily.

Agrigento if you want one of those one-of-a-kind, only-there experiences in the Vale dei Templi. Program yourself to spend the whole day there if you are into archaeology.

Right now Agrigento has a sculpture exhibition in the Valley of the Temples - it's really beautiful. Note that there are basically two halves to the temple site, plus the very good museum - if you're going in the hotter days of summer, be sure to take water and a hat! The Via Sacra has very little shade.

Art exhibits are displayed in the Valley of the Temples annually. Igor Mitoraj is featured this year.

Seems as if the concensus is for Agrigento and I am really looking forward to it. The thoughts expressed helped me "accept" that we will see Selinunte IF we have time, but can save it for the next trip just as easily. Gotta always be thinking about that "next trip"! Thanks for the heads-up about the special exhibit. We will be there 17-18 OCT, so I'm hoping for moderate temps!

I guess I'm going against the grain here in choosing Selinunte. I went to both on the same day, as I was with a small tour group in a van. Although Agrigento is vast compared to Selinunte's "ruined" temples, I just felt more akin to Selinunte, and will be going back this month. On the tour I was with, leaving from Palermo in the morning, we went to Segesta, Agrigento, and Selinunte all in the same day. So you don't have to limit yourself to one or the other. By the way, the week I arrived home in the USA, Sicily was featured on the cover of National Geographic, and inside they had a stunning photo of Selinunte's in-tact temple -- gorgeous!

I honestly think Agrigento is a place big enough to warrant a well-spent, non-rushed day at, so one can actually appreciate the alley (it's not really a valley at all), the archaeological museum etc.
