Just want to know if the above food items are easily found in Salerno and in the towns along the Amalfi Coast.
I had sfogliatella at a pastry shop in the town of Amalfi, located at the base of the steps leading up to the wonderful Cathedral. But, even better, in my opinion, was their baba - I salivate just thinking about it. Enjoy!
yes, arancini is available in most bars in Salerno, any place that has such small snacks to buy...... and a random question....is suppli a roman name for it? Because my Roman friends called it that, but I never heard it called by that name in the south... but my favorites are the Zeppole!!! That was the first italian food word I learned because I wanted one so bad hahahaha
and also sfogliatella are available anywhere that has cornettos....(probably the same places as well)
Arancini are rice balls with (usually) meat and mozzarela inside and fried in olive oil.
Some sfogliatelle are better than others, but they are a Neapolitan specialty definitely available where you are going. There are different types of sfogliatelle with different fillings, try the classic clam-shaped one filled with sweetened ricotta and bits of candied orange peel. Suppli or arancini are also available in most places that have snacks, but they are best when just cooked (lots of places microwave them to reheat, but that should be against the law).
My apologies for thinking suppli and arancini are the same. I should have known the difference. The problem is that here in the US the word arancini is usually used when in reality it is suppli. I've tried both. I loved the suppli I had in Rome :-).
Arancini are definitely rice! Sounds like Suppli is something similar served in the Rome area. (I'll try them next time, since I LOVE the Sicilian Arancini.) I am looking forward to my next trip Rome -- Sicily!!
