Sung mass or organ mass in Rome - not on a Sunday?

Being church musicians, we enjoy participating in worship services when we travel. We will not be in Rome on a Sunday but wondered if there were churches that you could suggest that offer an organ mass or sung mass on a week day. (We are NOT looking for services in English. We would prefer Italian or Latin.)
thanks!

Hi Judith,
I would recommend identifying a few churches of interest and combing through their websites. I'd start with Santa Maria Maggiore which has 7 daily masses. It is also home to the Liberian Musical Chapel, so I'd be surprised if one of them didn't include liturgical music. You may need to email/call ahead to identify what time to attend. http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/sm_maggiore/en/vita_liturgica/informazioni.htm (It's also a spectacular church to visit!)

St Peter's has a sung Latin Mass every weekday at 5 at the Altar of the Chair (ie, under the Bernini dove window). When I was last there, music was handled in different ways (eg, song vs chant; traveling choirs; etc). Most churches have one or two Masses each day, but music on weekdays would likely be the congregation singing with the cantor (or not). Another possibility would be the Liturgy of the Hours at monastic churches (most likely Benedictine churches)... most likely to be chanted would be Lauds, the prayer after dawn, and Vespers, the prayer at the end of the workday (but some communities just pray them without chant). The only monastic chuch I know in Rome is San Gregorio, which is between the Colliseum and the Circus Maximus. However, it's a small community, so it might feel awkward if you just wanted to "observe" Vespers; you'd be welcomed to join in (chanting the Psalms in Italian), but just confirm the schedule before you go. Sant'Anselmo is the international Benedictine headquarters and university. It would be a good bet. Their liturgy schedule is at: http://www.santanselmo.net/santanselmo/SA_Liturgia/index.html

Judith, one addition to my note above: The Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem is a young monastic order (founded in the 1970s). I've not been to their church in Rome, but when I've attended their churches elsewhere, they do spectucularly beautiful chanted liturgy. Their church in Rome is Santissima Trinità dei Monti, at the top of the Spanish Steps. You might check their schedule for Mass or Vespers... and thanks for bringing this up... I just decided to go there when I'm in Rome next month!

So glad to hear about the daily sung mass at 5 p.m. at St. Peter's as well as the other possibilities. This was exactly what I was hoping to learn about. Thanks so much, everyone!
