While staying in Tuscany, (near Castellina in Chianti), miy daughter would love to see some of the country roads full of sunflowers that are typically depicted on postcards of Tuscany. Does anyone know the best roads/routes for this? While we've seen plenty of beautiful vineyards in the Chianti area, in our outings to Siena and surroundings, have not yet come upon the fields of sunflowers. Thanks,
Marge
Could be you are just a week or two early for their blooms? They bloom earlier in the warmer areas near the sea and later in the hill areas, of course all dependent on weather/rain, etc. Maybe ask your hotels or Tourist Information centers for advice, too.
Last Saturday, (6/18) they were just starting to bloom between Cortona & the A1 Autostrade.
I was in Siena as well over this past weekend and didn't see any even close to blooming. The owner of Il Canto Del Sole, where we stayed, told us it would be better in August. Oh well, maybe next time! Good luck with your hunt!
