Sunday travel

Hi all. This will be my first time traveling abroad. I will be traveling in Italy, and fly out of Malpensa on a Sunday, morning flight. I will be staying in Galliate(Novara) region days before flight. I have been looking for hours trying to find if trains/buses run in this area at this time, with no clear answers. Can anyone help with this issue? Thanks so much.

I see trains running from Galliate to Milan train station on Sundays.
How are you planning to get to Galliate?
Those trains are operated by the company Trenord.it

Hi Jazz. I will be staying in Galliate. When I search the schedule for early times, it defaults to Saturday, and the Sunday times are later in the day. I would need to be at the airport by 0700-0730. Thanks for your reply.

Most here would advise that you should stay in a hotel near Milan Airport the night before the flight, not unless you know that you can get a taxi to take you from Galliate that early. If you are flying from Milan direct to a city in the USA you need to be at the airport 3hours before the flight. If it is a flight to another city in Europe 2hours before

According to Trenitalia.com, you can get to Malpensa Airport from Galliate with a train change in Busto Arsizio. Total journey time 52 minutes.

What time is your flight?

It looks like the first train departs Galliate at 7:18 and arrives at Malpensa at 8:10AM. If you need to arrive earlier than this time, you may consider staying at an airport hotel, or taking a taxi from Galliate. I’d probably choose the former option.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I was researching train schedules and didn’t know Jazz had already replied to you.

If you need to be at the airport at 7:00, you need to consider staying at an airport hotel
If you’d rather stay in Milan, stay near the Cadorna (Milano Nord Cadorna) station where you can take the Malpensa Express as early as 5:27AM. Journey time is around 43 minutes.

I am flying to the US, and I had began exploring the option of spending my last night in Milan, seems to be the safest and easiest solution. Thanks for the advice, and taking time to reply.

Personal preference but if needing to be there at 7:00 - 7:30, I'd stay near the airport and not in Milan.

Staying the final night in Milan is fine, and we have done that several times, but for our last trip in which we had to fly out of Malpensa early, and we were in Torino, we took the bus from Torino straight to the airport the evening before, got picked up by the free shuttle belonging to a VERY nice and cheap little hotel near the airport called Osteria della Pista, had quite a good dinner at the hotel (local people eat there), then took the same shuttle back to the airport the next morning. So we maximized our time in Torino rather than to-ing and fro-ing between Milan and the airport. But find out when Osteria della Pista's earliest shuttle is. If not early enough, they could call you a taxi for the short 7km trip.

The charming hotel building is from 1875, but it's very well renovated with completely modern and quiet rooms. I think we paid about $80 for the one night. We would definitely happily stay there again and we sort of hate hotels and especially hate airport hotels. Check it out! See if there is a train or bus right to the airport from Novara.

If you'd rather stay in Milan, the Hotel Berna is a couple blocks from the train station. Our policy is that we figure on 4 hours from the front door of that hotel to our departure gate at the airport. The train is easier and quicker but more expensive than the bus. Big, big airport and not fully staffed early in the morning.

Thanks for the detailed advice Nancy. I hadn't considered staying that close to the airport, thinking it would be to expensive. Flight leaves at 1000, so need to be at airport very early.

Nancy, I also need that last night hotel at Malpensa, coming from Switzerland a couple of weeks from now - and was using the search function here. Came across your recommendation for Osteria della Pista, did my research, and have booked. It looks exactly like what I wanted!

Rome2Rio estimates a taxi ride from Galliate to Malpensa at $50-65. That's what I would do, instead of moving to an airport hotel for one night.
