Sunday Trains

I am staying in Florence and I need to make a flight out of Rome on a Sunday at 10:30 am... the earliest train from SMN is around 7:30 am arriving at Termini a little after 9am....seems a bit tight for the 10:30 flight. should I wait and check train schedules again once I arrive or just bite the bullet and make a hotel reservation in Rome for Saturday night in order to not stress over making it to the airport? I think that is what I did last time but I'm not sure if entirely necessary. thoughts?

Go to Rome the day before and spend the night. For a flight to the US you need to be at the airport at the very least 2 hrs prior to departure. Once you arrive to Rome Termini station you are not at the airport yet. You need at least 35 minutes on another train to get there.

Thanks....was hoping I could make it but I suppose I'll look for a hotel near the airport to minimize my travel time in the morning.

I would rather spend my last night in the city center of Rome than in a hotel near Fiumicino. Your flight is not that early, you can easily leave downtown Rome at 7:30-8:00 by taxi and be at the airport before 8:30. It's a 30 min ride at that time in the AM when there is no traffic getting out of Rome.

june,

I agree with the others that it would be better to stay in Rome the night prior to your flight. Enjoy the ambiance of the city and a fine hot meal on your last night in Italy. Transportation to the airport is quick and easy either using a Taxi or the Leonardo Express (€14 PP, about 32 minutes) from Roma Termini.

I agree it would be nicer to stay in Rome for your last day/night. Look at the monuments lighted up one more time before you leave. Enjoy the evening and plan on leaving early the next morning. The Leonardo Express from Termini takes about 32 minutes and leaves about every 30 minutes so you have a few choices of departure times.

June, you really do not need to worry about minimizing your travel time from Rome to Fiumicino by staying near the airport. The Leonardo Express takes about 35 minutes plus what ever time it takes for you to get to Termini, etc. You don't even need to stay near Termini as you could stay in Trastevere or in the Campo Fiori area and catch the #8 tram to Trastevere and pick up the FR1 Metro train to FCO.

Then again if it eases your mind stay at the airport Hilton.

You can stay around the Termini Station area in Rome on your last night. I've stayed at both Hotel Aberdeen and Hotel Sonya a couple blocks from the station. That way you can enjoy parts of Rome and make it to the airport.

For me the AM flight departures there isn't really much traffic in Rome heading to the airport. I don't mind paying an extra 15 euro on top of the train price to take a cab instead. The hotels usually have a van that i've split with other guests going that way.
