My wife and I are having a difficult time finding a nice place for dinner on Sunday within walking distance of the Spanish Steps in Rome (which is where our hotel is located). I'm seeing either wine bars (great for lunch but not what we're looking for for the evening meal) or pizza places (see previous parenthetical). Sunday seems to be the day restaurants in that area are closed, and a mile walk to and from a restaurant after a full day of sightseeing is not what our 60 year old legs need. Any suggestions?
I believe this restaurant is open http://www.caffeciampini.com/. Might be a little "touristy" but it looks lovely. Actually you will find MANY restaurants open. And we couldn't stop walking (58 and 67 y.o.) ! Rome is so amazing. Night time is so lovely! Here's a fun posting you might enjoy, too. http://www.rooftoprestaurants.com/Italy.htm
Some people question this tactic, but my personal experience has been that you can get good advice from the hotel personnel, especially if you describe the kind of place you're looking for. (e.g. non-touristy, not too expensive, authentic Roman cuisine, romantic atmosphere, whatever) And they'll often make the reservation for you. But do be aware that some hotel staff apparently get kickbacks for these reservations.
We ate here, and enjoyed it. Ristorante il Gabriello http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187791-d1066539-Reviews-Ristorante_il_Gabriello-Rome_Lazio.html I can't find out if it is open on Sunday or not.
Like Ted, my husband and I ate at Il Gabriello and had a fantastic meal. This was in 2007 and I only hope the quality hasn't changed! Unfortunately, their website doesn't list their hours but they have a "Contact Us" form that you might be able to use to find out if they are open on Sundays. http://www.ilgabriello.com/ (Website in Italian only, but Google Translate does a nice job of interpreting - I think)
Sent this to AW in a Private message, decided to include here for other folks: One last suggestion...Vecchia Roma, in the ghetto area I think. http://www.ristorantevecchiaroma.com/ Not far from the Pantheon. It's about 1 mile from the spanish steps. It looks like they are open on Sunday, since they list Wed. as closed. We ate here twice in the eight days we were in Rome.
