We are planning our European trip for this summer and we find ourselves in Venice on a Sunday. I know the markets closed and the churches only have afternoon hours. Any suggestions to help up get the most out of our Sunday visit, especially the morning?
Take a walk out to St. Elena, a non-touristy Venetian neighborhood. Find a local cafe for pastries and caffe, then take a vaporetto ride: up the Grand Canal, circumnavigate the island, or go out to Burano and Torcello. (Yes, the islands are "open" as are their museums.) San Giorgio Maggiore is open 0830-1100 on Sundays (as well as in late afternoon). IMHO this is a better tower to ascend than the Campanile in Piazza San Marco.
