We will be in Rome on Sunday, 9/30/18. The day before, we will take a bus tour of Rome, and take a guided tour of Colesseum and Catacombs. We were hoping to tour the Vatican museums, Sistine on 9/30, but just realized it will be closed. Any suggestions on how to spend the day instead?
Sunday is always a good day for the Appian Way since traffic is restricted that day. And the catacombs in that area are a good choice if you did not see any catacombs the day before. Another good trip would be Ostia Antica. Very quiet, shaded, relaxing and convenient trip from downtown Rome. You could also combine it with St Paul's Outside the Walls -- the first vatican. It is impressive and not well visited.
The Borghese Gallery is lovely, one of the best places for Bernini in Italy. Here is the link: http://galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it/en/visita/visit-the-galleria-borghese. It is one of my favorite museums in Rome. It is located in a lovely park (plenty of families and tourists on Saturday and Sunday). You can then walk to the Spanish Steps (about 15-18 minute walk) from the Borghese and the benefit is walking down the steps. There are lovely places to have lunch near the Spanish Steps as well. If you feel so inclined, you can walk another 15 minutes to get to the Trevi fountain.
Have a great trip,
Sandy
A walk on some of the Appia Antica would be lovely if the weather is fine. Sundays are an especially good day to do it as it's closed to vehicular traffic on those days.
Soccer at Olympic Stadium, if clubs are in town. Well worth it. Termini to a team to the stadium. Just follow the soccer attire! Usually a 6pm kickoff, back to Termini by 9.
