hello all,
thinking of heading over mid may to mid july. this time focussing on the southern and central parts of the mainland. i will be traveling solely by public transportation. interested in art (paintings), history and architecture. not interested in beaches, nature, shopping, food & wine (except to satisfy thirst and hunger!). planning to use airbnb as much as possible. having said all that i am looking for suggestions, advice, tips etc. where should i go, what should i see? thanks in advance!
Would help to know where you have already been if anywhere?
And how long your trip will be?
Mid July will be brutally hot!
i traveled quite extensively in sicily last year, mid-june to mid-july. i can deal with the heat. after all, i am indian and lived in southern california for 32 years. i have only been to napoli and rome in southern and central italy. trip will be about 7 to 8 weeks. so far i have in mind matera, urbino, and stilo - for the byzantine church there. thanks.
I don't know how far north you consider to still be "central" Italy, but Siena and Orvieto are definitely worth visiting by public transportation. In southern Italy, I would definitely visit Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. If you're thinking about Matera and the region of Puglia, also look at Lecce and Taranto.
Florence for history, ART and architecture
thank you for your replies! adding lecce and taranto to my list. farthest north i went last year was orvieto. been to florence very briefly but certainly deserves a much longer stay. my boundaries are very amorphous and how far north i will venture will depend on my timeline of about 7 weeks. i do want to explore the boot and the heel and up to tuscany. please keep sending me your suggestions and tips!
don't know if this thread is too old for people to notice. i have a specific question. has anyone visited stilo in calabria using bus and/or train? rome2rio indicates both are available but time-consuming, especially from reggio calabria or lamezia terme. the quickest option seems to be a bus from catanzaro. when i visit the website of the bus line listed there is no trip to stilo on the menu. i know rome2rio is not always accurate so asking for people's personal experiences. thanks in advance!
