Summary of my recent trip continued

continued--
Cappuccin Crypt; people seem to flock to this because of the 'creepy' factor (and it is so) but it also has a beautiful calmness and spiritual feel that shouldn't be overlooked.

Visited the cat sanctuary, Torre Argentina, at the ruins and I would highly encourage people to visit. They care for about 250 cats who have been adandoned. Incredible work
by loving devoted people.

Ostia tour with Through Eternity (guide Marle). We loved Ostia. It is a very pretty site and extremely fascinating.

Sorrento -- 5 nights. Stayed at Il Nido and I simply cannot rave enough about it. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples--spectacular. It felt like a dream. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, the shuttle always on time and efficient (with fantastic driver Neillo), the place clean, bright and just lovely. We ate 3 out of the 5 nights at their restaurant overlooking the bay because, we figured if we want good food (and it was great!) and a view, why go anywhere else. We would then take a bottle of wine back to our room and sit on the balcony, watching the lights of the town twinkle, sipping the wine and reviewing the day. And repeatedly saying how lucky we were. It was magical.

Tour of Pompeii and Vesuvius with Positano Walking Tours. Pompeii was great; Vesuvius a bit of a disappointment. Maybe I expected it to be smoldering ;-)

Rented a boat on Capri and sailed around the island. One of the most gorgeous spots on earth!

It was a great trip overall. I immediately fell in love with wine (I am a very loyal beer drinker), was far more exhausted than I ever thought I would be, and I totally blew my budget....

and I can't wait to do it again

Welcome to the Cult of Those Who Love Italy! It sounds like you had a fantastic trip overall.

For Il Nido, it looks like the shuttle takes you into town, so I am guessing it is far enough out that you can't walk into Sorrento? Is it more of a resort then?

Also, it looks like you did quite a lot of tours. While most of the tours sound like they went great, did you feel they were all worth the time/expense or were there one or two sites you would rather have done on your own?

The shuttle for Il Nido runs pretty frequently (in the morning and evening; not in the middle of the afternoon) and is about a ten minute ride. But that ride is up very steep, winding roads so I wouldn't recommend walking.

We did do a lot of tours because I wanted to make sure I understood what I was looking at. In retro, not sure I would do the private tours of Ostia and Pompeii again (270 euro and 250 euro respectively) but there didn't seem to be options for group tours. I suppose reading a guide book and consulting a map would have sufficed but I do like hearing stories about the place and I am glad that I took tours of the Forum and Vatican

Hi Lisa,
I loved your trip report. Italy seems to have worked its magic on you. Happens all the time it seems.
I am so glad you enjoyed Il Nido. I usually try to stay in the centers of towns but on that particular trip esp, i was trying to really keep costs down. We only stayed there 3 nights with one dinner but wished we could have had more time there.
You were smart to not move around too much. Many people have one night stays in an effort to see "everything" That is impossible!
I often tell people that they can start planning their next visit to Italy on the flight home.
I do.
How did you arrange the boat rental on Capri? Was it a guided tour? Sounds fabulous.
I did not think a trip was in the plans for us this summer, due to college bills, bad economy etc. But My husband encouraged me to go with my 15 yr old dtr, so the 2 of us leave July 18 for 2 weeks. We will be meeting up with family there.
Can't wait. am about to jump out of my skin

"Is it more of a resort then? "

Il Nido is a small family run hotel in the hills overlooking Sorrento. As well as the shuttle, a local bus goes past so you are not tied to the shuttle service for transport in and out of Sorrento. The bus service, going in the other direction, will also take you to other parts of the Sorrento peninsula.

Another family run hotel, which has a pool, see the La Vue D'Or just up the road from Il Nido. Great views as well, the food is generally good but not as good as Il Nido. You can always walk down to Il Nido to use their restaurant in the evenings, it's not far.
