I just watched a turgid, predictable and stunningly filmed movie with George Clooney cruising around the Sulmona and Castel del Monte areas assassinating assassins. The urban landscapes as well as sweeping unspoiled natural landscapes were fascinating -bravo to the cinematograher. So of course I want to put it on my hit list (not a pun) of places to explore. Have you been to either of these towns and if so what did you think? Thanks

Sulmona is a neat town... about the size of town to spend one or two nights and relax a bit. If you like some hiking or snow sports its a good place to stay a bit longer. My impression is that there is not a heavy dose of tourism from outside of Italy there but it does get quite a few folks from Rome etc. I took the bus there from Rome which was a nice way to go and supposed to be simpler than the train. Very nice coaches and its a fairly pretty drive.
