My father (80ish) and I are considering a trip (about 8 days) to Sulmona and San Benedetto del Tronto to visit the areas where his parents are from. I have found very little information about these places. I imagine we would fly into Rome and spend a day or two there. Does anyone have any ideas as to possible itineraries and transportation suggestions? Would it be difficult for two non-Italian speaking Americans? Thank you.
We passed by San Benedetto on our way to Ascoli Piceno last summer. I can highly recommend AP for inclusion in your itinerary. We stayed in Sirolo and did day trips, in addition, to Urbino and to the Frasassi Caves, both of which are also outstanding attractions. The beaches all along the coast are beautiful. We like to have a car, so I don't know what you can do by train. The Touring Club of Italy publishes a very comprehensive guidebook to Le Marche. I think we got ours from Amazon, or check your local bookstore. We don't speak Italian, but we were able to get along with a little picked up in numerous previous trips and the large number of people who speak English.
