Suggestions on 7 days on Amalfi Coast

I am looking for suggestions for a trip to the Amalfi coast probably May 2014. I am thinking I will fly into Rome and spend 3 days in Rome first and then head south although that is not a definite I have bend to Rome several times so it is not an absolute requirement. So I am looking for suggestions including best way to get there either from Rome or maybe I should fly into Naples. Thanks for the suggestions.

Meridiana Fly is the only airline with a direct non stop JFK-NAP, but it's not a daily, maybe weekly. All other options require a change somewhere, so maybe a non stop to Rome (FCO) is faster in your case, since NY has several non stop options to Rome from both JFK and EWR. Naples is only 70 min away from Rome via fast train. Add another 35 to get from FCO to Roma Termini station, plus train transfer times. Basically you could be in Naples just 2.5 hours after your plane hits the tarmac in Rome and most flights from NY arrive in the morning. To return to the US it's a good policy to stay in Rome the night before, since most flights to the US depart in the AM. So save your 3 day Rome stay for last.
