8 of us will be ending a 10 day tour of France in Nice. Plan is to hop over to Italy and spend 3 to 4 days in the Northern part. We do not want to spend every night in a different town...Is making Genoa our home a wise idea to make day trips from?!?! Looking for any suggestions :-)
Or go over to Torino. Very few travelers talk about staying there. You could rent a car and see the mountains from there. Great food too.
Will you have a big van for all eight? Or using the trains?
Public transport.
Even though the trip to Turin takes about 5 1/2 - 6 hours compared to a 3-4 hour trip to Genova, it is well worth investing the time to visit Turin. The city has much more to offer visitors and day trips to the Piedmont wine country or mountains are easily arranged.
Genoa has a lot of charm once you go beyond first impressions (whoever designed that elevated expressway along the habor...), but Turin/Torino will be a much better complement to your trip: Piedmont is very, very different from the French Riviera, while Liguria, not as much. Ditto, Turin from Nice. Plenty to keep you happy in the town and immediate surroundings (Venaria Reale palace, Superga basilica) for 4 days, or a day trip to the wine country to the southwest (Monferrato or Langhe areas, where Barolo, Barbera, Barbaresco wines are produced) if so inclined. Makes me want to go back.
