suggestions forcar route between Dolomites and Genoa

Greetings
We have 5 nights to fill up our itinerary as we move from Dobbiaco to Portofino area on the coast.
We don't usually like doing large cities with a car and so tend to stay on the outskirts and bus in if needed.
We will be doing Modena, Venice, and Milan earlier in our travels. We will also be doing Torino when we are staying in Borolo.
So Im looking for nice places to stop for a night or two on the way to the coast and a couple of nights on the coast near Santa Margherita (have friends there).
So places to stay that would be relaxing and preferably less touristy in late June time frame.

Thanks so much for any recommendations...some of you have so much experience. This is our second trip to Italy and we are early 70s in age and pretty good health! We also love trying regional foods and wine along the way.

At the end of June most nice places to visit in Italy will have tourists, that is a fact of life.

I would think that visiting Lake Garda for a couple of nights, which is roughly along the route (just a slight detour from the freeway route), about half way, would fit your requirements. Verona, is also another alternative (although it is a city, albeit not a big one).

Anything between lake Garda and the Apennines near Novi Ligure (north of Genoa) is a boring drive on a flat plain.

If stopping at Lake Garda, the towns of Malcesine or Torbole would be more convenient along the road south. They are also in the north part of the lake, probably the more beautiful part. Garda or Bardolino, a bit more to the south but still on the Eastern shore of the lake, would be also convenient. If you are more interested in Sirmione, then you could stop at Peschiera.

No matter where you choose to stop (lake Garda or Verona) I think you should stop at least 2 nights to see at least something.

Another vote Lake Garda. We enjoyed staying at Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda. Both are very peaceful with lovely lake views and walks. Plus, you can ferry to other towns such as Malcesine if you wish. Have a wonderful trip!
