Suggestions for visiting Turin and Piedmont area

I could not find any info on Turin or Piedmont through Rick Steves which I found curious. We are considering several days in the area after leaving Varenna. Any experiences or advice about this area would be appreciated. We will be traveling there the second week of October 2016.

Thanks!
Susan

Try Lonely Planet or Michelin guides. The RS guides are detailed for what they cover, but most of Italy is not covered.

Turin has an elegant city centre with many porticoes.

Some things to consider seeing are:

  • the Cinema Museum (take a ride in the glass elevator to the top of the Mole Antonelliana)
  • Automobile Museum (I am not a huge car fanatic but it was fascinating)
  • Egytpian museum
  • Juventus stadium and museum (you just might get to see a new addition to the trophies if they win the Champions League against Barcelona in a few weeks)
  • the original Eataly
  • Palazzo Reale
  • Piazza Castello
  • The Museum of the Shroud (Museo Sindone)
  • The parkland along the river is also pleasant for a stroll.

Don't worry about it not being in Rick Steves book - the place is worth a visit and is refreshingly free of the tourist hordes of the places Rick recommends.

We are just back from touring southern Piedmont, and highly recommend. You do need to research thoroughly before you go. We found the itineraries and other info on the region's tourist site a good start www.piemonteitalia.eu. Turin is a good place to land and settle in. We had been there before but added Stupinigi this trip which is an incredible palace. As you are going in the fall, Alba and the surrounding Langhe landscapes are imperative. Other places we enjoyed: Bra, Cherasco, Cuneo, Fassano, Savigliano, Saluzzo, Staffarda Abbey.
