Suggestions for Varenna

Hi, my family will be in Italy next week and my son was invited today for a job interview that he cannot postpone. We are planning to be in Varenna the day of his interview and the hotel we have booked has not great wifi reviews. Does anyone know about the cell service there, or any cafe with free reliable wifi that anyone can recommend, either there or in Bellagio? Trying to think through options for him, he graduates from college tomorrow so trying to help him with some research so he can enjoy himself tonight. Thanks in advance if anyone has thoughts for us.

You may want to look at the international data options on your home cell phone plan. We’ve also used Orange data eSIM and SIM cards in Italy successfully. This would allow your son to select a quiet venue of his choice as well. For such an important interview, I would try out whatever option you choose in advance. Have a wonderful trip!

Is this with Zoom, Skype, FaceTime? Can he choose?

Did you ask the hotel? Sometimes certain areas are better than others (stronger signal). They may be able to recommend something if they do not have a good place in-house.

THanks so much for the suggestions. I'm still gathering information, I've written the hotel about wifi options. He has confirmed he will need to use a laptop for the interview, so Zoom or some other product. He will have to do a technical interview with coding so he can't do this over the phone.

Checking with the hotel is a good idea. It's quite common to have decent signal strength in the breakfast room and lobby when it's iffier in some of the rooms upstairs.

If worse comes to worst, perhaps consider sending him to a business-class hotel in Como that has really good Wi-Fi reviews for one night. Booking.com has separate ratings for Wi-Fi if you click through to individual hotels. I'm not suggesting you make a reservation on that website without checking the hotel's website, where you might well find a better rate.

Thanks for pointing out the wifi reviews on Booking.com, this is really good to know. I have plan B and C if our hotel wifi is no bueno.
