We will be arriving in Rome on June 16, 2008,leaving Rome for Montepulciano on the 21st for a week, leaving Montepulciano on the 28th. Flying out of Rome on the 30th.
Where should we go for the nights of the 28th and 29th? We will be renting a car, when leaving for Montepulciano. Not sure where to rent it from, airport etc... any suggestions? I have most of our days planned for Rome, Vatican, Forum, Col. Borghese Gallery. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have tried to leave at least the AM or PM open so that we have time to wander in Rome. Is a day trip to Naples and Pompeii worth it? Or any other areas?
Day trips from Montepulciano? I know we want to go to Florence and may need to do it twice. What about Siena,
Assisi and other towns in Umbria. There are 4 of us, all pretty easy going and easily satisfied. Like the history and just enjoy each others company. I'm the only one that likes to have an idea of what I might be doing when!

When we based in Montepulciano we took a drive out to Massa Maritama. Nice drive with a stop at abbazia di San Galgano not far from Massa.
Assissi well worth the drive with a stop at Lake Tresimino.
Orvieto is also an easy drive.

If you're wanting the Pompeii experience but in a more convenient location, you might want to spend your last two nights in Ostia, right next to the Rome airport (Fiumicino). Ostia Lido is the resort area on the Mediterranean, and Ostia Antica is the ruins of the old Roman port.
And there are shuttles from Ostia to the airport.
Google Earth will show you how close Ostia is to the airport.
