We will be on RS Sicily tour 5/5-5/16 and want to hit a destination for a few days before the tour and after the tour go to Sorrento to base for a few days to see Pompeii and other sites in the area. I started thinking about possibly Malta to go to before our RS tour, but thought I'd check with you folks on the forum who might have some other ideas and suggestions. Thank you!
Looking at the itinerary, my suggestion would be more time in Palermo and a few days in Cefalu. Given how much there is to do in Palermo, the tour barely scratches the surface, as they say. We really liked Cefalu. We walked the town, enjoyed the restaurants and hiked up to the rock. The beach is lovely, though not soft sand.
Great tour; Sicily is truly a wondrous place. If I were choosing and wanted to add other than Sicily locations to my trip, I’d have time in the Eternal City Rome per certo, so easy since it’s my entry point in Italy. I’d put my travel nights post tour in amazing Naples, with its incredibly unique history and culture. Happy planning and enjoy the journey!
We just finished the Sicily tour a week ago (great experience!), having started our trip with four days in Malta. We had a great time exploring the island. Since English is spoken there we found it easy to get around. We used Bolt ride share quite a bit. The antiquities of this island paired well with those found on Sicily, yet Malta has its own uniqueness. It was a little tricky getting to the Rick Steves tour's starting point in Palermo, as there were no direct flights from Malta. We caught a very early flight to Catania, then a very comfortable 2:30 hour bus ride to Palermo. We both remarked that we were glad we did Malta first, as we were pretty tired after the Sicily tour. Good luck with your planning!
