I loved B&B la dimora del centro and found it very reasonable all things considered. Perfect location, great rooms, etc.

Apparently you are correct about this place, it is already booked for September.

WOW i'm surprised. Well it is only three rooms. I stayed there not that long after it had opened but I guess people are hearing how great it is. Bummer! I think they have a sister property. Anyway if that's not available either I'm sure people will have good suggestions. My personal recommendation though would be not to stay near the station but in the center. The station area is not all that interesting and plus, Florence is so small and walkable and the station is not that far, you can always walk or take a taxi if you have a lot of luggage. Being in the center right near the Duomo or surrounding area is so fun b/c then you are just steps from pretty much everything. The first time I went to Florence I stayed out in the Oltrarno and while I loved the hotel (hotel david) i found it a bit too far out of town for my tastes. There are tons of reasonably-priced (depending on your budget) B&Bs in the center, i would take other recommendations here and also check Rick's book!

Last September we stayed at Il Bargellino (http://www.ilbargellino.com/), located within walking distance of the train station. It was also easy to walk everywhere else we wanted to go. We paid 85 euros per night. I assume the price depends on when you are going. It is owned by Carmel, an American, and her Italian husband.

Last month we stayed at the Hotel Axial. It was very nice and within easy walking distance of most sites.

Try Residenza della Signoria. Check tripadvisor for the great reviews; it has lovely, spacious rooms, perfect location between the Duomo and Uffizi, easy walk from the train station, and reasonable rates. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Sharon Have you got the Rick Steves' Florence or Italy guidebook? There is a really good description of many places to stay, with amenities and price guides, written in Rick's clear yet tongue-in-cheek style. You could get lots of well tested tips there.

Hotel California is nice. Not too far of a walk from the train station, and it is half a block or so from the Duomo (always easy to find your way back!). Also close to the Accademia. They had a very nice breakfast, not the traditional Italian toast and coffee (some more recent reviews on TripAdvisor are complaining about the breakfast, so maybe it changed). Some remodeling has just taken place so they are quite nice inside, more luxurious than any of the other hotels I stayed in.

Hi: You should check the reviews on Tripadvor for the Palazzo Alfani al David, which is on Via Ricasoli right across the street - literally - from the Accademia. It is absolutely one of the most fantastic places we have ever stayed, and we paid 89 a night (in March) for an absolutely gorgeous apartment with a full kitchen.

Do you have the RS Italy or Florence 2011 book yet? As I often say on this site, it will be the best money you spend on your trip. Happy travels.

Try the Tourist House Ghiberti http://www.touristhouseghiberti.com/ We have stayed there twice. It is just a block behind the Duomo. The rooms are modern and nice, only 5 rooms. They serve a nice breakfast and also have a hot tub and sauna available to guests. It is owned and operated by a very nice couple. The rates are resaonable (we paid about 150 euros 2 years ago). They also provide a discount if you pay in cash.

Our group of 6 stayed in 3 rooms at the Hotel Balcony almost exactly one year ago, and it was perfect for us. Very reasonably priced, located just down the street from the duomo, and a very short walk from the train station as well (hotel is between the train station and the duomo). The hotel actually does have a cute balcony where we sat and enjoyed our own wine (and complimentary coffee beverages) in the evenings. Found it from very helpful reviews on Trip Advisor.

Last month, we stayed at the Hotel dei Macchiaiolli (www.hoteldeimacchiaioli.com) in Florence. It was in a great location (near the Accademia), was very reasonably priced, clean, quiet, comfortable, served an excellent breakfast, and had a very friendly and very helpful staff. I highly recommend this beautiful hotel, which is located on the second floor of a palace and has several public rooms (including the breakfast room) with frescoed ceilings; it is listed in Rick's Florence and Tuscany book.

We stayed at the Hotel Colomba on Via Cavour, just down from the Duomo, and not far from the train station. It is not in Rick's guide book. All the hotels in his book were filled. This hotel is great, very reasonably priced. Rosanne speaks English as do most of her family. It is very clean and comfortable. Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor.

In September 2008 we stay at the Florence Old Bridge, just across the Ponte Vecchio - probably a 20 minute walk from the station. Florence Old Bridge is in partnership the Hotel La Scaletta across the street, where you check in. Breakfast is available at La Scaletta. Both are very nice. We were a little afraid of street noise, but with the triple pane windows closed, we couldn't hear a thing from outside. There was a little noise one night from some other guests in the common room, but not late. The terrace at La Scaletta has spectacular views! Rates are: La Scaletta 115 - 130 euros for a double; Old Bridge 85 euro double. They were also happy to arrange reservations at academia and uffizi for no charge.

We also stayed at Hotel Enza a few years ago and found it clean and comfortable. As I recall, there was a nice little bakery on a corner nearby - we frequented that for coffee and a pastry in the morning. Easy walking distance to everything. We never once took any public transportation - just walked a lot!
