We have a one-day layover in Rome and thought it might be better to stay at a small town near Fiumicino airport. Any suggestions?

The title of your post and what you are looking for don't really match. Additionally, your post is lacking detail - so for example, do you have an early flight to catch the next morning ?
However, if you want to stay at the airport, the airport Hilton would be a great choice. We have stayed there on both ends. Arriving and departing. It's very easy. You can take the walkway to terminal 3 and be there in about 10 minutes. The hotel also has a shuttle to other terminals.
As for the free day you have, the other benefit is that the Hilton hotel has a bus to and from Rome. So if you plan things right and get the schedule, you can take the shuttle into Rome -it's free and back to the hotel and save the 50 euro taxi.
