We are staying in Florence for a week and would like to take 1 or 2 day trips. We have arranged for a private driver so we can go where we want and spend as long as we want at any stop along the way. We enjoy wine and/or food tastings and maybe even a little shopping but would like to avoid real "touristy" areas. Any suggestions as to what towns/areas we might want to explore would be most appreciated.
Just a thought, why not ask the private driver. In my opinion, who better to ask than a local! Good luck & enjoy, it sounds wonderful!
I highly recommend a private driver Alessandro at https://alessandrocammilli.wordpress.com/. We used him in March for a day trip to the Tuscany region. Our friends have used him a dozen times. You won't find a better ride. Very knowledgeable and personable.
If you are looking for non touristy areas in Central Tuscany a US based tourist website such as this one is not the best place to ask.
90% of American travelers who follow RS’ advice know only of Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Volterra, and maybe Cortona, all of which are, after some of Tuscany’s provincial capitals (e.g. Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa) the most visited towns in Tuscany by American (and European) tourists.
Your local driver will steer you better.
I enjoyed our visit to Greve last summer, as well as Volterra.
