Suggestions for lodging around Lucca

Hello! My husband and I, along with my husband's son and his girlfriend, will be in Tuscany for 9 days in Sept/Oct. We've done some research and determined that there's a lot we want to see in the vicinity of Lucca. We want to explore Lucca, but we're also planning to rent a car and do a lot of day trips so we can explore the countryside and the smaller villages.
We know that staying in Lucca with a car is not advised, so we'd like to stay outside of Lucca, but no farther than maybe a 30 minute drive away.
Can anyone recommend either a specific town/area we might want to look at for lodging, or a specific hotel/B&B/whatever near Lucca? As I said, there are 4 or us -- we need 2 bedrooms and at least 1 bathroom/shower, and someplace to park. Also, we're budget travelers, so we're not really interested in luxury, just a clean comfortable place to lay our heads.
Thanks for any recommendations you can give me! :-)

One thing you might want to determine is if you want to be able to walk to dinner or are fine with driving every night (or even if you want an agriturismo where they serve dinner). That to me is the single most important factor--you can find places with parking close enough to within the walls of Lucca, so I would not let that dissuade you from staying there.
Also, 30 minutes covers a lot of ground--pretty much all the way south to Pisa, east to Pistoia, or north to Barga. I am sure if you just put Lucca and select "with parking" (and your other parameters) into a search engine like Booking.com you will get lots of options.

Several years ago our daughter and her family spent 3 weeks in Lucca staying inside the walls. They had a rental car for part of their time in Lucca. They told me they parked their car at a community parking lot just outside the walls. They never had any problem finding a parking space.

We are staying at a hotel in Lucca inside the walls in a few weeks. We will have a rental car for our last full day there to sightsee around the countryside, and then the next day continue on to Siena. So we plan on parking the car just outside the walls, too. I thought you might want to know this.
