Suggestions for Italy itinerary

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an itinerary for a trip to Italy. Right now, my friends and I are planning on flying to Rome, spending three days there, then going down to Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri for a couple of days, then on to Florence, Como, and Venice. Should we fly to Naples and do the Amalfi coast and then go to Rome? Should we start in Venice and do Rome last? I have to say I do prefer starting with Rome.

Thanks!

Adding Lake Como is a bit of a complication, but can be done. You don't want the town of Como, by the way, you want one of the mid-lake towns such as Varenna or Menaggio. Lake Como is most easily reached from Milan, which suggests the possibility of flying into Milan and out of Rome, or into Rome and out of Milan.

Lots of ways to do this, one is:

Fly into Milan

train to Varenna on Lake Como

train to Venice

train to Florence [added after Gio's reply]

train to Rome

train to Sorrento

see Pompeii and Capri as day trips (not on the same day) from Sorrento

train back to Rome

fly out of Rome

Not too many people fly into or out of Naples, but it's possible.

If you want to start in Rome, you can do the above route in reverse.

Kent suggests a wonderful plan, but unless I'm mistaken, he left Florence out, and you included it. How many nights do you plan on? That would be a key, too, given how much you wish to see.

By the way, we did fly into Naples last summer...and out of Venice, and it worked for us. But I agree with Kent: Rome is the more popular 'exit' strategy for Italia!

Florence would fit nicely right after Venice, and before Rome (about halfway between the two, actually).

Thanks Gio and Kent! Good advice. This really helps with our planning.
