Suggestions for hotel in Trastevere, Rome

My husband and I are traveling to Rome in May of this year and have heard from friends that Trastevere is a neat place to stay and is quite centrally located. They stayed at the Hotel Sanfrancesco for 80 euros/night in Nov but now the prices are 199 euros/night in May. I wonder if there is another "trendy" type hotel anyone could suggest that wouldn't break our bank. We are looking for double room w/ bathroom included in the room. We want to be sure it is safe and conveniently located. We will be in Rome from May 21-26.

Thanks

Traci,

You might have a look at Casa san Guiseppe in the Trastevere area. It's close to Piazza Trilussa, and I'd certainly recommend it.

Unfortunately, I think the Trastevere area is now somewhat "discovered" so many Hotels are renovating and increasing prices.

Good luck!

since the Trastevere area is "discovered" would you have any other recommendations for lodging in Rome?

Traci,

Although the Trastevere area is "somewhat discovered", I'd still suggest considering a stay there. It's a wonderful and vibrant area, one with a slightly different "character" than the area around Termini or other parts of Rome (IMHO).

Check the Italy guidebook, as there are lots of listings in various parts of Rome. If you want something a bit unusual, you might consider The Beehive, which is a Hostel within easy walking distance from Termini. It tends to be very popular and books up early, but if you're interested check their web site.

Cheers!

We rented an apartment in Trastevere last May and loved it. It was our second time in Rome and it's a wonderful neighborhood to wander around in. And it is indeed pretty well-located. It's definitely a trendy spot, so it's very popular with locals and tourists especially in the evening, and especially around the Santa Maria in Trastevere church. Unless you're a night owl be sure to ask how quiet your room will be if you're anywhere near a piazza. (You can do a little research through Google Earth to get a sense of the place.)

If this is your first time in Rome, I do suggest a hotel/B&B rather than renting an apartment. The staff will be able to help you with suggestions of places to go and things to do.

We stayed at the Hotel Trastevere a year ago for 90 euro a night, their rates are now just over 100 euro, but still very reasonable for Rome. We enjoyed it very much, seemed much more like an Italian neighborhood, some market noise, but otherwise no complaints. Many restaurants in the area, little backstreets, and easy walking distance to Campo di Fiori and Piazza Navano...heck, most of Rome is easily walkable.

How about Gulliver's Place B&B... is it too out of the way? It is near the Termini Station (between Via Nazionale and Santa Maria Maggiore). Any other suggestions? Hotel Trastevere sounds good if it's only a little over 100 euro.

Also, How safe is the safe hotels have at the front desk? Would it be best to find a hotel w/ a safe inside the room?

Traci,

I'm not sure that all Hotels in Italy have a Safe at the front desk, and I didn't notice if any had a Safe in the Rooms. This would probably be more common at the "high end" Hotels (Sheraton, Hilton, etc.). I usually keep items like Passport and Credit Cards with me at all times, but I usually leave other valuables in the room and haven't had any problems so far.

Hopefully one of the others here will have more specific information to offer.

Cheers!
