Train or private car? Which would be the best option (fastest, most economical) with one medium rolling suitcase and one carryon? Previously I thought we were getting off in Livorno but was wrong, so now need to rethink getting into Rome from the cruise ship terminal in Civitavecchia. Hope I'm not this mixed up when I get there! thanks for any suggestions.
the cheapest way is to take the train into Rome. It takes about an hour and costs 4.50 each. With one medium bag and one carry-on you should be fine, just make sure you can lift your own bags. Once you get to Rome you can either take a cab or walk to your hotel depending on where it is. A private car or taxi will cost at least 100 euro. Donna
The train station in Civit... is about a half mile walk along the beach from the port entrance. Just follow the flow of people headed that way. It is basically a commuter run to Rome 3 to 4 trains an hours taking 45 mins to 1:15 depending on train. The fare will run between 8 and 12E depending on train.
Joanne, go on youtube.com. There's an actual posting of how to do this step by step and I think it's posted by Walks of Italy.
The you tube is very marginal but ok for a light overview. It is accurate but heavily sanitized for a commercial firm - Walks of Rome. First, I don't think you can walk inside the port anymore. Second, it will be a zoo especially if more than one ship in port. RoninRome is a much better source for information. Third, you would be wise to buy your ticket at another train station anywhere else in Italy. Just buy a second class. open seat tickets and remember to validate it that day. I have seen the ticket line outside the station door. It could take longer to buy the ticket than the train ride to Rome.
Joanne, I recently added to this article, Taking the Train between Civitavecchia and Rome. Although geared towards a one-day "cruise" visit to Rome, it also can help you on a one-way trip to Rome from Civitavecchia by train. There are multple car services that can get you to Rome from Civitavecchia. For two people, rates are usually between €110 - €130. The train is about €9 for two people... so you'll find me on the train. Good Luck!
Thanks to all! especially for the info on the utube video and to Ron for the pictures and details of the port. I love this helpline! Joanne
