My fiancé and I are planning for two weeks in Rome for our honeymoon, which includes participating in Sposi Novelli during the Papal Audience the first Wednesday we are there. We booked an Airbnb in the Quadraro district, a more residential part of the city and were wondering about the logistics of getting from there to the papal audience on that morning with a big poofy wedding gown. I really really want to avoid public transit with the gown. I saw that there is Uber Black in Rome, however I don’t know how early they typically start in the day (we want to be there when the gates open, around 0830.) My fiancé also suggested asking the owner of our Airbnb to call us a cab for the morning. Any suggestions guys?
Since this is your wedding have you considered hiring a limousine car service?
The way I understand it, it is not her wedding. That will already have taken place at home. It seems to be a special Papal audience for Newly Weds (Sposi Novelli) and I guess it is the custom for the brides to wear their wedding dresses. Good to have a second occasion for the garment! But I don't know why she (they) can't just order a cab and be done with it. The bigger problem will be trying to get a taxi after the event.
Here in NY you can get an uber anytime of the day or night, I would imagine Rome would be similar. Give yourself time. We went to the Papal audience, had Coliseum tickets booked right after (only time I could get them). The day before, we did a dry run in the taxi, just to see how long it would take. Made it with time to spare. The next day was a day of protests, taxis and traffic were not moving. Got out and took the metro.
Another option is to buy another dress. Get something that is easier to deal with and packable.
We have been happy using the international car service Blacklane dot com in Rome and other places. If it meets your needs, you could pre-book one ride to go there and another to return.
I did this mumble-mumble years ago before Uber. We had the hotel call us a cab for the morning (we asked the night before and they thought we were weird for needing a cab until they saw me in my wedding dress the next morning). I don't remember exactly, but I suspect we flagged down a cab to come back after the audience.
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! Have a wonderful honeymoon. The papal audience is a wonderful experience and was definitely a highlight of our trip.
Congrats on your upcoming wedding and honeymoon! To your question, on my first trip to Rome I used Uber services for a 7:15am pickup and then 8am another day. Also, consider the mytaxi app. Same concept as Uber, but uses the Rome taxi network.
