We will be staying in Sorrento and would like to train or boat into Naples for a day. I've been to Sorrento but never spent any time in Naples except for the train station - ugh. My husband would like to see Naples. Any suggestion as to what to see and what to avoid would be appreciated.
We stayed in Sorrento and did a Naples day while there last December. Rick Steves' Italy guide has a perfect day-in-Naples tour, starting with the Archeological Museum and proceeding with a walking tour thru the heart of the city. Do you have his book?
Thanks for your response. Yes, I have the book. How much time did you allow for the day trip? Did you go by train or the boat? I've been to Sorrento several times but have never taken the boat to Naples.
Barb, I know it sounds hokey, but their hop on off bus is great! http://www.napoli.city-sightseeing.it/eng/# It gives you a great overview of the city and you can interchange with all 4 lines. Places to see: Castel dell Ovo, Plazzo Reale, Galleria Umberto, San Severo, and the Archological Museum. Take the ferry, beats the circumvesuvian for ambiance.

Ricks' walk is not to be missed, and be sure to check out Christmas Alley
About 5 blocks from San Severo on Via San Gregorio Armeno.
Barb, I was in Naples for about 6 - 8 hours. I followed Rick's walk, seeing the Archaeological museum, the last Caravaggio, the Piazza, and the draped Christ statue (I don't remember the church offhand). I also had two pizzas before calling it a day. I was staying in Ercolaneum so I took the Circumvesuviano. I'm sure the ferry is much more picturesque. Jim
