We'll be travelling from Matera to Bari by rental car in May 2014. Since our time frame will place us in Bari on a Monday, we'll need to spend a day there in order to catch the Tuesday overnight ferry to Dubrovnik (the ferry schedule just came out)so I am looking for suggestions. I plan on turning in the rental car on the 12th which is a Monday but if there is someplace along the way that is worth a visit I can work around that just so that I can get the ferry on Tuesday night. All suggestions are appreciated!

Have you seen the Trulli villages? You could drive through Alberobello on your way to Bari (you'd be going just a little bit out of your way). Turn in your car in Bari and take the train to beautiful little Polignano al Mar and spend the night there, training back to Bari the next day. (If memory serves me, it's about a 30 minute train ride.)
Monopoli is just a little further than Polignano al Mar --- a little bigger town, but another overnight option with frequent, inexpensive train service to Bari.
If you could keep your rental car one more day, you could avoid some of those train rides. Might be worth it.
This is a beautiful part of Italy. I'm sure you'll enjoy!
